Since I’ve decided to go ahead and get all the way real and live about me and my life, I think I’ll begin with a series of articles to introduce myself in the main areas of focus here in Thorne’s World. I’ve given a lot of thought on whether or not I should separate the main areas of interest or “niches” into separate blogs, and after much consideration I’ve decided that trying to write a blog (or several blogs) in a “niche” is too boring, too limited, and too much like pandering to a particular market or target demographic, which I feel might then put too much pressure on me to write for that demographic, instead of writing my truth.

So I’ll just be keepin’ on with Thorne’s World being the big, varied and eclectic place it is! This, my dear Constant Readers, is the first in a series I’m calling “More Than You Prolly Wanna Know About Thorne”. This first one will cover Tattoos and may touch a bit on some of my other art.

As a brief aside, the tattoo and back featured above is mine. Umm.. well, the tattoo is mine by virtue of being inked upon my back. The artwork is by Judy Parker of Pacific Tattoo. Although I’ve been tattooing for many years, I didn’t get my first largish piece until I was 42 years old. A few pieces later, I began this piece at 45. It is very symbolic and important to me, and I will be having additional sittings with color and will post more pics then. Now, without further ado:

13 reasons NOT to Get a Tattoo!

(inspired by this post and ensuing commentary at MPS)
tattoo FAQs tattoos sunflower tattoo

1) You are under 18.

2) You are drunk.

3) You are loaded on some other substance.

4) You are hung over or have consumed a lot of alcohol during the previous 24 hours. (This will make you bleed more and is a pain in the ass for your tattooist, as well as increasing your healing time and the likelihood of fallout.)

5) Your friend/neighbor/drug dealer says “C’mon, lemme drill on you man. I got this gun for a bag… dude, I’m an awesome artist, I’ll just go wild on you, man…. just freehand”.

6) Someone says you should.

7) You’re overwhelmed with love for your boy/girl-friend and want to show them how much you care with their name permanently inscribed upon your flesh.

8) To show people how “cool” you are.

9) To piss someone off.

10) Because it’s cheap/a “good” price. “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a low price is forgotten.”

11) Because “everybody” else is doing it.

12) You decide to do it, but find yourself uncomfortable in the atmosphere of the shop you’ve chosen or with the tattooist.

13) The tattooist you’ve chosen is more interested in his ego than in your vision of your tattoo.

Tenniel Tattoos – Pen and Ink for Skin

These tattoos were done as body art interpretations of the original illustrations by Sir John Tenniel for the Alice in Wonderland books by Charles Dodgson, who wrote under the nom de plume of Lewis Carroll.

The tattoos are done with both single and tight 3 needle clusters as necessary to create the line weights. The wonderful thing about doing this work is that it is true black work. One can’t even call it “Black and Grey” with any authority, because there is absolutely no shading but for the impression of shading given by the crosshatching.

These pieces were a joy for me to do on several levels. First I have long been a Tenniel admirer and secondly I love to do pen and ink illustration and this work is just permanent pen and ink technique on skin.

That’s the series so far, although we are working on an entire leg from foot to thigh of Alice & Company. Please visit Thorne’s Ink to check out more of my work.
