The Storm
(a haiku)
Come thunder, lightning, rain.
Come storm, to heart-wise mirror;
inside weather- out.

I love Haiku. I’ve been writing it and playing with it since 5th grade, which is when I was first introduced to it, by an amazing teacher, Nancy Friday. Nancy, wherever you are, thank you for the best year of my elementary school education. You were an inspiration!
More recently I have come across bits of Haiku here and there on the Internet, and thought it would be fun to begin a page of haiku poetry and links. Please feel free to leave your original or found haiku in comments. Try to include sources when possible.
I’ll start the linkage with a true gem of a collection that I discovered through Clipmarks, Keola Beamer’s Spam Haiku Page, which was a source of deep contemplation and near hysterical giggles.
Just a few of my very favorites:
Twist, pull the sharp lid
Jerks and cuts me deeply but
Spam, aaah, my poultice.
And who dares mock Spam?
you? you? you are not worthy
of one rich pink fleck
Oh tin of pink meat
I ponder what you may be:
Snout or ear or feet?
This one kills me:
Cube of cold pinkness
Yellow specks of porcine fat
Give me a spork please
Another gem:
In mud you frolicked
Till they cut, cleaned and canned you
How now, ground sow?
Silken pig tofu
The color of spanked buttocks
Blushing at my knife.
SPAM, too, needs a wife
What consort for my Pork Prince?
Ah! The Velveeta!
SPAM glistens pinkly;
Cat taps it with wary paw
To see if it’s dead.
My own modest contribution:
Compressed pinkish flesh;
golden gelitinous goo
Get thee behind me.

And fellow clipper bignosemousie offered the following elegant response:
delicate piglet
oinkless in your tiny tin
happy on my tongue
I recently came across:
Haiku is easy,
but sometimes makes no sense.
Refrigerator.
(shit. I lost the link already. Claim this, somebody??)
my most elegant response:
Reading I ponder;
is the light still on in there?
The meaning of life.
