Green up your Garden Decor!
| June 3, 2009 | 12:01 am

A couple weeks ago I wrote a list of fantastic junk to use in mosaics. Before we get into attaching some of the more randomly shaped items of various materials (which can get a lil tricksy if you don’t want your parts falling off randomly and for no apparent reason), I thought I’d give you a step by step how-to on a small project to get you started.

I know you have some old pots around that are just too worn and ugly to use, but still too serviceable to break up for planter-bottom-drainage. Maybe you are wanting to change the color scheme of your patio or porch and are feeling guilty about your secret desire to just say “To hell with being green! I want new STUFF!” Maybe you’re broke, like me! Maybe it has simply never occurred to you that you can have “new” stuff by giving a makeover to old stuff! In any case, this is a great way to give a facelift to a worn out old terra cotta planter (and with just a couple small changes works on plastic planters, too)!Click on the thumbnails for a larger view, or watch the flickr slideshow at the bottom of the post.

Avant Green- It’s All about Art

candle recycle upcycle avant green eco crafts

I’ve been a pack rat forever. I can’t help but see possibilities for creation in damn near everything. I remember when I was 10 or 11 years old, I made a sculpture for my Mother for her birthday. It was constructed using a cinderblock, a round BBQ grate, some rusty antique hinges and door knobs all wired together and spray painted black, before I threaded some dried thistles and seed pods through the slats of the grate. My Mom adored it, and it held pride of place in our living room for years.

It wasn’t called upcycling then, it was just funky “Hippy” art. I spent most of today working on a birdbath that I’m making by modifying and tiling a mini satellite dish (Thanks for the trash, DirecTV). It’s the first one, so implementing my design idea has taken awhile, but I think I’m on the right track. I’m taking photos as I go, so when it’s finished I’ll write up a How-To.
I’m pretty much wiped out tonight (or this morning, I should say), so I’m going to keep it short and super sweet with a few excellent green craft links.

You might remember the Junk Mail Mosaics, but have you seen these 3-D Garbage Portraits? Wow!

Some excellent ideas from these awesome eco – crafted designs. Check out that fire pit! (*note to self_ take a pic of my washing machine tub brazier).

Would you like to create your own fountain for that feng shui energy near your entryway or for the yoga room? Check out the simple instructions here using mostly found/recycled items.

Do you have any old T-shirts that aren’t covered in stains? I don’t, but if you do you might want to try these T-Shirt Make-overs. These are not even remotely recognizable as T’s!

Being the candle light and romance kinda gal that I am, these ideas for creating candle holders from a variety of re-purposed junk, really light my fire!

That ought to keep you busy for the weekend.

Peace, out!
