Don’t Worry, Be Happy

smiles are good

What’s good in Thorne’s World today? Well, what isn’t? Haha! Really, a positive outlook can change the way we view things, can’t it?

Let’s talk about spreading the GOOD virus today.

I’m sure you all know that it takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile, right?  We’ve been hearing that for a looong time now; before teh interwebz even! Well, being the research freak that I am I decided to google that old 43-17 ratio (just to get my facts straight, don’t-cha-know).  Are we really surprised to discover that it’s a buncha BS?  According to The Straight Dope, (verified by yours truly at a few other sources that I’m too lazy to list), it actually takes 12 muscles to smile and only 11 to frown.

But here’s the deal, let’s not be lazy, okay?  I mean, really; let’s go all out and tone up that extra smiling muscle.  I mean, we don’t even have to go to the gym, can you beat that?  It’s a two-fer… no, a three-fer.  Smile and feel good.  Smile and others smile back.  It makes them feel good and adds to your own good feelings.  Give your face a workout.  See?  How cool is that??

Smiling is pretty magickal, actually.  Notice my OtGF icon up there?  You must know there’s a reason I chose the angel/devil imagery for myself.  I’m a lil twisted, I spoze.  I get a kick out of the silliest things.  For instance when I’m out during the holiday shopping and everyone is so damn grumpy and self centered, I just love to walk around smiling and wishing folks “Happy Holidays”.  Sometimes I pick the sourest looking people or the most harried or stressed looking.  I don’t go all uber-cheerful or anything , Thornie is not a too peppy kinda gal… I just smile and wait for eye contact and say something nice.  I love to watch the stress melt from their faces as they remember themselves, most of them, and smile back.

I do it a lot, not just during the Holidays, but the holidays seem to be the time it packs the biggest punch.  There is often an opportunity to be perverse like this with service people like store cashiers… it’s always fun to blow a kiss and a smile to someone flipping you off or cursing you out in traffic, too.  (This one is good for the angel/devil part of Thornie… it seems to be equally satisfying whether the recipient smiles back or gets even more pissed.  It’s a driving thing. Hehe)

Over at This Eclectic Life today for OtGF, Shelly posted a killer music YouTube.  Aretha Franklin singing Johnny Mercer’s Accentuate the Positive.  Aretha turns what I always thought was a bit of a cutesy, hokey song into a great listen that is definitely catchy.

I’m going to follow Shelly’s lead today.  You may hate me for this, because it is definitely one of those songs that get stuck in your head, but then, in these times, is it really bad to have “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” repeating endlessly in your mind?  I think it’s a GOOD thing!

That’s OtGF in Thornesworld for today!

Peace, Out!

So Shelly‘s idea for this positive posting meme is:

We are living in some pretty negative times, aren’t we? I think that many of us are living in a state of fear (though I’m in the state of Texas).

Fear feeds upon itself
. It’s like a contagious virus. I’m tired of adding to it. I want to start another kind of “virus.”

You see, I think that optimism can be contagious, too.

Won’t you join us?? Help spread the good love for Only The Good Friday!

Leave the link to your good in comments and I’ll repost it here! Thanks for participating!

At last count we have, of course, Ms Red from This Eclectic Life (who started this happy virus) checks in with some GOOD music.

Mo, spreading the good news that happy is GOOD for us!

Toni sharing good words in her lovely way.

Betmo’s good musings

and Weezie Lou has joined up with her mystery garden!  Woot!

Did I miss anyone??  Let me know in comments and I’ll add you here!

Goodbye Prince of Darkness
| January 22, 2009 | 4:34 am

Some of you may remember that the Indigo Girls’ Prince of Darkness was my ode to GWB.  I thought we’d have a listen and watch to commemorate his influence passing out of our lives.

I also thought it only fitting to have a new song for this new era.  A song that speaks to hope, and to looking at ourselves, and to working together.  I like this one, again the Indigo Girls.
Hello, One Perfect World.
