This night photo of one of my Sacred Datura is my Summer Stock Sunday submission.

Although it does bloom during the day, the flowers seem happiest to me at night. Tomorrow morning this bloom will lie yellowish and wilted. It will bloom all Summer and grow to perhaps three feet high and as much as twice that in girth. Before it dies back it will produce round, stickery seed pods.
This plant grows wild all over North America. People call it Jimson Weed and Loco Weed for it’s hallucinogenic properties. Many native cultures use it to have dreams and visions and it’s said to allow astral travel. It’s in the Nightshade family, so it is not a plant to be used lightly or without a full understanding of doses and preparation.
Peace, out!

What a coincidence, jimson weed was a suspected cause of illness in the episode of House I watched today (wasn’t it though).
It looks quite different from the desert-blooming plants we have here – softer and gentler somehow. I like that it prefers the night. It seems fitting for a plant of its power.
I see it all over the place but I never knew what it was. Thanks for the edumacation!
Wishing you a scent-sational Sunday!
Thanks for the info too. I do not think I have laid eyes on this before?

You are great at this – you find the perfect flower on perfect background – and it always look mystical the wayyou frame it – love it!
So that is Datura… why do I think of Castaneda?
I’m so tickled that you all like it. I sometimes feel that my desert6 photos are a bit uninspired, but this is Summer to me!
I’ve heard of stories of people being hospitalized after ingesting this plant, but I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen one.
Beautiful!
Datura is my favorite desert flower. Please be careful with it.It can have a nasty side affect…
I had an experience (when I was young and dumb) with some juice made from the seeds that took away my vision for 2 days. I was soooo relieved on the third day when I could finally see, that I shall never forget the experience.
Bright Blessings

[...] but this is the first one to bloom. Forget the coffee, now I was starting to think like my friend Thorne, and wanted to take some cool pictures of flowers just like she [...]
This is a lovely capture … I’ve not seen this plant in bloom first-hand. Love the kitty relaxing in the previous post and the MARVELOUS monochrome image of TODAY ;–)
Thanks for visiting Small Reflections.
Hugs and blessings,
Yes it is a dangerous herb to play around with… (Heya Tamari… I had a young and dumb experience with this one too- we didn’t do that one together did we? We had some fun and crazy times… hee hee!)
I live in northeast Ohio and had one come up in my flower garden. I have no idea how. I was going to pull it out when I was weeding but it looked like such a healthy plant I left it to see what it was. It is about 4 feet tall and 5 feet wide. Nobody I asked had ever seen it before. Thanks to the internet I was able to identify it.
