13 reasons NOT to Get a Tattoo!
(inspired by this post and ensuing commentary at MPS)
1) You are under 18.
2) You are drunk.
3) You are loaded on some other substance.
4) You are hung over or have consumed a lot of alcohol during the previous 24 hours. (This will make you bleed more and is a pain in the ass for your tattooist, as well as increasing your healing time and the likelihood of fallout.)
5) Your friend/neighbor/drug dealer says “C’mon, lemme drill on you man. I got this gun for a bag… dude, I’m an awesome artist, I’ll just go wild on you, man…. just freehand”.
6) Someone says you should.
7) You’re overwhelmed with love for your boy/girl-friend and want to show them how much you care with their name permanently inscribed upon your flesh.
8) To show people how “cool” you are.
9) To piss someone off.
10) Because it’s cheap/a “good” price. “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a low price is forgotten.”
11) Because “everybody” else is doing it.
12) You decide to do it, but find yourself uncomfortable in the atmosphere of the shop you’ve chosen or with the tattooist.
13) The tattooist you’ve chosen is more interested in his ego than in your vision of your tattoo.

You are so right! I’ve had quite a few of that 13 when I was tattooing! My fave is a guy who came looking for “something aztec, like a Buddha”- hahhahah!
I’ve got one little tattoo. Can’t remember much of how it got there, though :-)
Carolina!!! A tattoo artist, as well? I’m not going to be surprised at anything we have in common anymore! LOL
Anthony! Naughty! You are full of surprises.
Found you through your Slogbite win. Congratulations. Fantastic, fun blog. I’ll be back to read more.
People with tattoos want to be looked at, or do they? Would be a good question to ask. Some do, many don’t.
I loved the Illustrated Man stories from Ray Bradbury, especially the movie with Rod Steiger and Claire Bloom. The tattoos come to life and tell stories off the mans body.
I have one, right shoulder. I like it. It’s for my daughter. She left this world in June of 1991, (auto accident). But number 12 I have had experience with first hand. I think the artist who was going to do a tattoo on me was suffering from number 3. I left the place and never got the pirate with the mermaid, but still want something of that genre at some point.
peace.
None for me thanks :)
Every year I go through the “hmm, do I want a tattoo” question. My husband reminds me that it will hurt like hell.
But I still consider it. Good rules!
Well, so much for the ‘it’s a real beauty…A Mexican cutie’ rationale for spontaneous body modification.
;-)
A most concise list, Thorne. My spouse, a tattooist, would concur with these reasons wholeheartedly.
#14 – cause you’ll never hear the end of it from your Mother!
All good reasons! Are we going to get a list with 13 reasons in favor of tattoos, too? I liked Carolina’s customer, an aztec Buddha, wonderful! Happy TT!
Loved the list! The humor and serious points! I want a tattoo, but I’m the type who can’t settle on one design, so it’s very hard for me to decide on a permanent thing! My son got one and I was very proud of the time he took to contemplate all of it.
I had to laugh at #2, 3 & 4…isn’t that what most folks think they should do in order to get thru the process of getting a tattoo? LOL
My husband put my name on his arm a week after we met. He was pretty sure of himself.
That was 14 years ago!
Ahh, Thorne, I might be consulting with you… I might wind up with a nice scar on my thigh that I’ll either turn into art or will have cosmetically tatted over. How long after surgery do I have to wait before I can do that? (I’m expecting to hear six months to a year, btw,)
I think you’re right. These are all good considerations. Happy TT!
Mountain Woman, Thank you for visiting! I hope to see you again.
Spadoman: An interesting question. My ink is first always for me. Sometimes nice to show, but not a necessity. I do love to show it off at tat shows and conventions whether working or attending for fun. It’s always nice to share and compare and admire with other collectors. Memorial tats are so special to my heart. Always an honor do design and ink for me. My heartfelt condolences on your loss. My precious daughter lost her baby son, my darling grandson, to SIDS, on 10-18-07. These are losses that never heal. The best we can hope for is, I think, that they “heal over” in some way. I like to imagine it like an oyster surrounding and coating that sharply faceted mass of pain in layer upon layer of some transparent flesh that helps to shield us a tiny bit from the constant rending assault.
Maybe. Somehow.
Because you just don’t like them? I don’t have any, and have never understood why people would want to disfigure themselves.
How about – because you just want to be on T.V. Have you seen some of the people on Miami Ink?
I always wanted my kitty’s paw print on my shoulder – but was never brave enough to do it – this Bumble’s a wus.
Wow, cool list. I never would get one – because I’m chicken. My Dad had two armfuls – because he was a paratrooper in the Korean War, and would get one everytime he jumped out of a plane. He regretted them though when he got older.
Thanks for sharing. Happy TT!
