13 things Thorne loves about World of Warcraft
So when I got that award the other day, I had to list 5 addictions and one of them was WoW. Molly (The Bumbles) came by and said she had to google it, so I thought I’d tell ya’ll a lil about it.
1) WoW is an MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). Being a creative minded SF and fantasy buff from waaay back, I’m an old school Dungeons and Dragons player. I love a lil hack n slash. When my daughter and hubby started playing WoW I thought it looked like fun and gave us all a way to connect and be together after we lost our lil Pharoah.
2) It is fun. It is also a black hole into which time disappears if I’m not careful. The graphics are simply stunning. I love the variety of landscapes, skies, and creatures. I love flying from place to place on a gryphon and enjoying the world below.
3) My main character’s name is Athornia. As Athornia I am a sexy, pole dancing Night Elf with green hair.
4) I’m a hunter, so prefer a ranged weapon (I currently use a crossbow, although I carry a big ass axe for those up close and personal encounters). And I have pets who fight for and protect me. My favorite pet is my big cat, Nightmare. I am a Beastmaster, so my pets and I have a special bond that gives us bonuses to health and damage when we fight together.
5) I enjoy the action and fighting aspects of the game both when I’m on my own, (just me n my kitty) and playing with others. I belong to a guild called The Rat Pack (Think Sinatra, Dino, and Sammy) that my Bonnie (daughter) and Clyde (SiL) started and is one of the most successful guilds on the server we play on. I am known as “Auntie” and “Thorni” and “the evil auntie” for my occasional flirtatious teasing of the “jailbait” of various genders. I really enjoy the interaction with other people in doing instances and dungeons together. The cooperation necessary to complete them is pretty cool. Everyone needs to work together, each doing their job. There are 5, 10, 25 and 40 person raids. This means that that number of real people from all over the world have to get together at the same time and be committed to the same goals. It’s pretty cool.
6) I have met a lot of creally nice and smart people in the game. Mostly younger people than me, it’s true, but I love young people. I am one of the oldest women I have met in the game. My “sister-mom” (F.’s hubby’s Mom) also plays. She is 51. My Girlyboi got hooked after watching me play for months and has out-leveled me recently. We have fun playing together.
7) I like to explore the game world when I’m bored or don’t feel like “working” (ie: doing quests or making game money). I will just start wandering and see where my feet (or mount) takes me. When I was at lower levels and would decide to go off exploring, it was not a rare event to have my kids hollering at me in guild chat “MOM what are you doing THERE?!!!” Or calling me to say “go back, you are going to get killed”. LOL. It was pretty cute. They worried about my character dying. I kinda thought that was sweet.
8) Unlike a lot of folks (prolly the age thing again), I enjoy doing some things in the game that others find boring. Fishing, for instance. Hee hee. Sometimes I find a pretty and quiet spot, strip to my chonies or don my fishing outfit (yes, I am a freak. I have clothes I like to wear when I’m fishing- blue pedal pusher overalls and a red witch hat) and just fish and enjoy the scenery.
9) I love the game economy. One may have 2 professions and craft items to sell on the auction houses or to other players. Athornia skins and does leather working. I also enjoy speculating. I buy cheap and sell high.
10) I don’t really like this part, but I must include it. I get wet alot. For some reason, if there is any body of water nearby I am likely to fall into it. It’s mostly because my comp isn’t quite fast enough for seamless movement, so I lag a lot. It has become a sort of joke, although it’s quite inconvenient sometimes. “wetNELF”. (It’s especially inconvenient when it’s not water, but some other fluid such as lava. I die then. It sux. My poor lil nelfgrrll looks so sad floating facedown.) LOL
11) I collect “vanity pets”. these are non-combat pets. Lil critters that just follow you around. When WoW added the “achievements” and having lots of pets is one of them now. I have 48 vanity pets. LOL. The Westfall Chicken still eludes me. I will get that little bastard. It has become an obsession. It’s really sad when a 47 year old woman will stand in one place flapping her arms, shuffling her feet and clucking like a chicken for 20 minutes straight. Well… errr… I mean… a 47 year old woman’s game character.
12) I like all the silly and cute emotes. I love that when a toon “talks” the punctuation is reflected in the body language. Hugs and kisses and rude gestures. Waves and cheers and chargesand dancing. Folishness. Too much fun.
13) Probably best of all is that it gets me out of my own head when it’s not a fun place to be. When I’m stressed or worried or sad. I love anything that can do that and not endanger me or anyone else!
That’s my TT! Thanks for stopping by! I’m off to visit now!

I’ve heard and seen so many things about WoW, although I’m not an online gamer but this game is surely sounds full of fun!
I have played lots of games, but have never played WoW…may have to check on that.
Answering your question: I have read “Wicked” several times actually. One of my absolute favs! I read it, saw the Broadway show, though the show is very different from the book, bur it’s AWESOME!
I’ve been eying the game with interest for a while, but am afraid of the black hole of time thing. Knowing me, I’d get way too sucked in and regret it.
My hubby is a WoW addict. Been playing since the beginning. I played for awhile with him before he deployed but not since. I am always evil in these types of games so my character was horde. He prefers alliance. I have agreed to start a new character and play again when he gets home. My last character was undead. I am thinking a blood elf this time.
Happy TT!
Hey..heard tat tis game can be quite addictive..is it really very fun?
Thanks for stopping by my T-13
I’ve never heard of this. It’s all another world to me. Is it like Second Life? I tried that but gave it up because it was really boring after a few minutes.
I have a friend that’s totally hooked on WoW, so I knew some things but you brought it to life. Being addiction-sensitive I won’t have a go at it… :)
Thanks for visiting my meme TT!
Have never tried it, but I can understand how addictive it could be. I can totally relate to the need to get out of one’s own head, and into some fantasy at times :) Happy TT and thanks for stopping by!
My sons love World of WarCraft. I watch them play sometimes and I can see why you all like it.
I never got into online games like these…but I understand the attraction!
I have three boys who are totally addicted to World of Warcraft … especially my 18 year old. They are wanting to get the new one out, but haven’t yet. …like they really need to spend more time online!
my oldest has nonverbal learning disorder (which means he doesn’t get nonverbal language like body language, tone of voice, etc.) but he’s very smart and is very strong in written language. He can’t relate to people irl, but he’s good with relating online because it is in written form, so I know that’s a huge reason why he’s drawn to this game.
This game sounds like a form of online crack! I shall stay FAR away for fear of losing my job. I suck at video games – tried playing something recently on my friend’s PSP and I had no idea what I was doing and kept dying. I am happy that you have found something for #13 – I think that sums it up best. For me, my #13 is books or movies. Your is just more interactive. And I love that you go virtual fishing.
Always wanted to play but afraid of the addiction! lol Sounds like fun.
Many of my co-workers are obsessed with WoW I don’t have enough expendable free time (between blogging & my Galaga obsession while I watch tv- there’s not enough time in the day!) Your comments on it give me a little more information so I have some points of reference when they get going on it during work!
Thank you for stopping by my blog yesterday
My son likes to play WoW .. I am too afraid I would get way to sucked in! .. and then guilt would set in .. but then again, but a kayak infront of me and watch me get sucked in! LOL! Thanks for visiting my blog!
I haven’t even ventured to play Scrabble online (my favorite game) never mind other computer games in which I have to change my name. But I’m glad you enjoy it. I like the word WOW, one that I said all through the 60′s.
Thanks for the WoW info. I miss D&D. Le Sigh.
[...] Featured T13 post from last week: Thorne This one was dangerous for someone like me. I’m so easily lead astray. [...]
I about this game through my hubby who is a professional game tester. He had employees who’d call into work “sick” so they could stay home and play WoW. Escapes are good, though, we all need them.
Great post — I love to read well-written stuff when people are talking about something they love.
My husband is a gamer as well, although I don’t think he does WoW. I can’t keep track of what he plays, it changes often. :)
that was an informative and fun tt! i have heard of that game and seen its abbreviation several times in cyberspace but had no idea what it was. you make me want to play but that would probably be dangerous. when i was in high school me and my friends used to play vampire: the masquerade. that was hella fun.
happy tt!
