Okay, I couldn’t wait.  I really shoulda waited ’til the grout was fully dry and the cloudy leftovers are buffed out.  But check this out!  I freaking love it!

Temporary Studio Tile Work

Temporary Studio Tile Work

So here’s the deal.  I love ceramic tile, but I’m not so hot on the usual grid pattern.  Ya’ll might remember that I do broken tile mosaic, and I’ve done my kitchen counters (kitchen’s a mess- I’ll post those pics another time) but I lovew this staggered look.  It’s pretty easy if you have a selection of tiles the measurements of which are divisable (like 24, 12, 8, and 4) But this was a lil more difficult.  I had 20’s, 12’s, 8’s, 17’s (WTF??) and a few random small tiles to work with.  As an aside, I want you guys to know that not only did I make this floor for the cost of the thinset and grout, I saved all these beautiful tiles from the landfill.

Just FYI: Once clay/ceramic materials is fired, its molecular composition is permanently changed.  Think of all the pottery found at archeological digs.  It’s lasts forever!  All of this lovely tile was headed for the landfills for future archeologists to find and discover what a wasteful society we were.  I saved it!

Muahahahaha…..

*edit:
I thought I should clarify. Although I do indeed employ used tile in my broken tile mosaic and objet d’art, this tile is brand new and was headed for the landfill anyway. In our lovely consumer society, home decor fashion changes about as often as most of us change our underwear. Well, not quite that often, but you get the idea.
Tile outlets, stores, whatever throw this stuff out. Whether it’s demo tile for display leftover from last season, leftover stock that didn’t sell, or custom order extras; it all goes into the landfill. Unless we rescue it. I simply go to the tile places and ask if I can have it. I take whatever they are throwing away. I dig sample cards out of their dumpsters. I really lucked out with this selection, because it all is somewhat stone looking and made for a nice layout, but I take whatever I can get because I will find some use for it sooner or later.
