Hey - you made me cry. I had to go through this with my mom's mom. It hurts so much. I understand and know how lucky she is to have you. love you -

Wonderful stories, and I read between your lines that there are so many more. Sometimes I regret never having tape-recorded any of my grandparents and their stories, but I'm so grateful that I was there to listen. I tried -- once -- with each of my grandmothers, but the presence of the machine diluted the nature of the stories. Plus it was just more fun to be there in the moment with them than to be so focused on "keeping" them in that way.

I love this post. My grandma has alzheimer's...beginning stages. She lives in another state but when I talk to my mom on the phone she always tells her to tell us hi and that she still remembers us. It's an everyday struggle but she's still here and that's enough for me. Having someone caring for her helps and I agree about letting your grandma do some things on her own.

the good thing in all the saddness: that she has so many people to carry these stories for her. she passed on a little of her wild spirit to me sitting on the porch all those nights. bumming my cigarettes. laughing and chatting. but mostly, it was just me listening. and i know i'm not the only one who listened. i know you have to carry the pain and saddness and i am so sorry for that. but there are so many people to carry the joy. and maybe that in itself can relieve some of the pain.
